I love everything about communications!

Whether designing and programme managing Marketing campaigns, or re-designing sitemaps; the challenge remains the same: to take something which already performs and transform it into something superb. That’s what really drives me. I acknowledge the challenge and show there is something more creative I can do with it.

In its dullest sense communications is the delivery of techniques to allow for the transmission of information. Yet when combined into a series of integrated activities their impact can orchestrate revolutions, obtain premium price for commodity products, and make a flavoured soft drink appear sexy! What makes an advert featuring a child dressed as a miniature Darth Vader the most successful viral Ad ever with 41 million hits? What makes the difference between the worst website and clearest website in the UK?  Why did Twitter, which started out with users feeling cramped within its 140-character confines and discussing what they had for breakfast, turn into an explosive dynamo that now has over 200 million accounts?

Marketing is about doing something different

I sign onto the statement, “if you fail to plan, then plan to fail”. I was fortunate in my trainers: Nestle, Britvic Soft Drinks and VELUX who provided fertile ground to form good disciplines, exposure to others, and the value of forward planning. Yet, I still come across Managers who argue against it!

Marketing is a passion. Marketing is about doing something different. There is no “Ultimate Web Marketing Guide” but the name did make me buy the book!

Career Milestones

    • 1981 – Awarded a Scholarship by the Engineering Industry Training Board (EITB)
    • 1983 – Awarded an Honours degree in Business Studies specialising in Financial Studies
    • 1988 – Joined the World’s largest Food Group Nestle as a Sales Representative
    • 1989 – Appointed Private Label Executive at Nestle Croydon HQ
    • 1990 – Promoted to Assistant Brand Manager on the Crosse & Blackwell range
    • 1991 – Joined Britvic Soft Drinks as Trade Marketing Executive
    • 1992 – As sole Trade Marketing Executive, programme managed the global launch of Pepsi-Max into UK test market: Retail Grocery Multiple Accounts, ASDA, Tesco, Safeway, Sainsbury’s, Co-ops, Morrisons
    •           – Programme managed the Tango re-launch “Happy Slapper” campaign “You know when you’ve been Tango’d” and the Pepsi Re-design through Top End FMCG Accounts
    •           – Replaced Loctop 6 pack packaging with new packaging design – the first of it’s kind in the Soft Drinks industry.
    •           – Launched the Michael Jackson Pepsi promotional Campaign co-inciding with his UK tour
    • 1993 – Promoted to National Account Executive on the Tesco Account (value £26m) and awarded Budgens and Norman’s Superwarehouses as sole Account Manager (value £1.1m)
    • 1994 – Returned to Scotland as sole National Account Manager for MacLay Ltd, the largest family Brewer in Scotland
    • 1995 – Secured MacLay’s first exporting opportunities: Canada, USA, Hong Kong, Spain, France
    • 1997 – Joined World Leaders VELUX Roof Windows Ltd as Trade Product Manager. Designed first bespoke UK website and project managed my first Exhibition – Interbuild 1997 with a budget of £340,000
    • 2000 – Promoted to Marketing Services Manager with budget responsibility of £760,000. Re-launched over 1,000 Roof Windows (B2B) as part of a product re-design
    • 2001 – Promoted to the new position of Commercial Manager (After Sales Service) for UK and Ireland man managing 6 staff. Targeting B2B and B2C
    • 2002 – Raised business by 63% to £1.7m in year 1 with £400,000 of outstanding orders. Designed VELUX Groups first electronic shop
    • 2003 – Resigned as Senior Manager and re-positioned my career focusing on Digital Marketing embarking on my journey to become a 360 degree Marketer. Joined a Graduate Digital Technology course provided by New Media Consultancy Net Resources Ltd
    • 2004 – Accepted a contract with Capital communications Group to assist in the re-branding of the company for future market flotation
    • 2005 – In April joined Scottish Borders Council as sole Website Manager to provide Maternity cover on a 12 months contract. Scottish Borders website awarded the Plain English Web Award in December for the “UK’s clearest website 2005
    • 2006 – Joined Stoneridge Electronics to review and re-position their on and offline marketing strategy, laying the foundations which doubled turnover in 3 years
    • 2007 – Joined regional market leaders Edinburgh Solicitors Property Centre (ESPC). Re-positioned their website from property search tool to informational point of reference and revenue generating “cash cow” meeting the needs of a changing property market
    • 2008 – Joined Standard Life Plc in Customer Services Department (Strategy and Development) to promote Employee Pensions website Employee Zone (B2C) and employers administration site Group Pensions Zone (B2B)
    •             – Gallup Strengths Finder themes identified as Strategic, Maximiser, Achiever, Learner, and Relator
    • 2009 – Made presentations to Director level proposing the re-positioning of both websites from administration function to ecommerce sales tools using web 2.0 techniques within the site structure and designed the “GetActiveOnline” email marketing campaign
    • 2010 – Joined Depression Alliance Scotland on secondment from Standard Life PLC to re-design and re-position the Charity website in preparation for the organisations re-branding in 2011.
    • 2011 – Joined Charity Mercy Corps Scotland as their first Online Marketing Manager in a newly created and ill-conceived role. Redundant July 2011
